BBA’s agile and rigorous certificate maintenance cycle enables Tremco CPG UK to add additional fire safety information to its existing Alphaguard Blueshield Certificate

The British construction sector views the rigorous maintenance cycle that accompanies every BBA Agrément Certificate as a true differentiator. It keeps the product certification assessment compliant throughout the product’s lifecycle; ensuring a continuous certification of fitness for purpose, while serving as a demonstration by the manufacturer of their continued commitment to quality. But within that rigour lies the efficiency and agility to cater for changes that may occur as the product evolves within the market. That’s why when Tremco CPG’s AlphaGuard Blueshield Inverted Roofing System underwent additional testing to meet fire safety standards, the agility bedded into the regular review process of the BBA’s Agrément maintenance cycle enabled Tremco to amend the existing Agrément Certificate, as part of an existing maintenance framework.

Tremco CPG UK, manufacturers of construction products including flat roofing systems under its brand ‘Tremco’, received its first British Board of Agrément (BBA) certification over 20 years ago and the company has continued the investment ever since. Tremco’s AlphaGuard Blueshield is a structural waterproofing roof system designed to provide a foundation for waterproofing beneath complex external finishes such as green roofs, blue roofs, recreational podiums and terraces. Originally achieving a BBA Agrément Certificate in June 2023, it is suitable for applications under all types of living roofs that help with sustainable management of water and the environment. In 2024, the system underwent additional extensive independent tests, which obtained the highest fire classification; Broof(t4) under (BS EN 13501-5 2016). The tests, which were verified by the BBA during the process, included varying insulation types and thicknesses (eg. EPS and XPS ranges) to ensure that all their solutions were compliant with thermal efficiency and achieved the Broof(t4) classification.

AlphaGuard Blueshield has been specified in numerous prestigious and demanding projects where the system’s safety is paramount. Recent projects include Tottenham Hotspurs’ new stadium, where the 16,000m2 area required an effective and proven inverted system at podium level. Another notable project is the multi award winning Battersea Reach development on the banks of the River Thames in London, where AlphaGuard Blueshield serves as the foundation for the roof, terraces and podiums across the whole 8000m2 project.

Customer Reassurance

The team at Tremco recognises the importance of independent third-party testing to reassure building stakeholders. Daren Fraser, Director of Product and Technical Solutions at Tremco CPG commented, “We are recognised internationally for delivering high-quality roofing solutions, and supporting customers for the long term with asset management to ensure that buildings are watertight, compliant and future proofed is always at the top of our agenda. BBA certification is crucial for each of our roof systems, as it provides an independent assessment of our offerings, which is continually reviewed and maintained.

BBA certification supports a seamless customer experience, which the team at Tremco appreciates. Daren further explained, “Previously, we had to provide multiple cumbersome documents to demonstrate compliance with fire safety regulations. Now, all the fire testing is consolidated into a single BBA certificate. This streamlines the process for our clients, who appreciate having one comprehensive document. It simplifies compliance and gives clients and NHBC contractors confidence that our system’s fire compliant and provides reassurance.”

The Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA), the Trade Association for the liquid applied roofing and waterproofing systems market, also requires their manufacturer members to have BBA certification for their products. Consequently, companies like Tremco CPG UK need to demonstrate their commitment to quality and safety to maintain their market presence.

The Review Process

During the review process, the team at the BBA scrutinised the new test information and audited Tremco’s manufacturing facilities to verify the formulation had not changed and that the certified system is manufactured consistently. The BBA assigned a dedicated project manager to the project to address any issues quickly. Regular meetings, held every two weeks, kept the process on track with timely updates.

Katy Roberts, Sales and Marketing Director for the BBA added, “Agrément Certification is a commitment for the lifetime of a product with ongoing scrutiny and reviews. We undersatnd that change happens in the lives of our clients; whether it be in the lifecycle of the products themselves, how they are produced, or the regulatory framework they are used in. The Agrément maintenance process is designed to ensure the same rigour and compliance to BBA framework, performing to a duality of purpose where the certified product continues to comply to the criteria against which it was assessed, while at the same time, within the framework, continuously building efficiencies that support continuous improvement and development that supports the client’s requirements. The basis of the maintenance cycle has been designed to enable regular audit and inspection of production and process which allows the BBA team to address changes and make any required amendments to the certificate. This process provides further reassurance to clients and specifiers that the BBA Certification is kept up to date. In this instance, Tremco took the opportunity to include additional enhanced testing to their product to ensure its fire safety.

Conclusion

Daren Fraser concluded, “Gaining a BBA certification is essential for every roof system we offer. Without it, our solutions could miss out on being specified for projects, particularly new builds. This certification provides our clients visibility into each system’s testing, compliance and durability. Furthermore, it is also a requirement to be able to feature our roof systems with leading associations, such as the LRWA. The BBA’s process was seamless process from quotation stage through to the final draft review and we look forward to working with them again.
